These earrings are part of Lucky Olive’s fortune cookie collection. The fortune cookies are made from combining two shades of red with one shade of light blue pearl clay, creating a beautiful contrasting ripple. Then, each cured cookie is generously gilded in 24 karat pure gold leaf, which we source from Kanazawa Japan.
There are many legends circulating the mysterious origins of the American fortune cookie; most likely, they were popularized by Japanese immigrants during the late 19th or early 20th century. The original Japanese cookies differ in several ways: they are slightly larger; made of darker dough; and their batter contains sesame and miso rather than vanilla and butter. They do, however, contain a fortune called “omikuji” (御御籤); unlike its American descendent, the small slip of paper containing the fortune is wedged into the bend of the cookie rather than placed inside its hollow center. This cookie is called “tsujiura senbei" (辻占煎餅) and is still sold in some regions of Japan. Some time around World War II, fortune cookies moved from being a confection dominated by Japanese-Americans to one dominated by Chinese-Americans; they added lottery numbers to the back of the fortune slips and gave them to customers at the end of a meal in restaurants. Today, fortune cookies are served in Chinese restaurants all around the world, and even by some Fortune 500 companies!
These charming confectionaries are not meant for consumption only; they also hold much spiritual significance to the eater. The fortune they contain within symbolizes luck, fate, wisdom, guidance, and all that is unknown to the person who picked THAT particular cookie. Its interpretation and importance is given by the receiver of the fortune. Fortunes from fortune cookies can inspire people into life-changing action. Doesn’t that symbolize something wonderful?
